Everybody probably played Doom nowadays, being one of the greatest shooters of its kind (being the mindless killing genre). But an original adaptation that probably not that very much people have played is the ASCII version of Doom, being Doom the RogueLike.
Keeping everything good from the original, the killing, the blood (ASCII blood though), the fastpaced feel, music and sounds, it has completely turned genre to the turn-based Rogue Like (think Nethack). You are an @ symbol, working it’s way through hell blasting all the h’s (humans), i’s (imps), c’s (demons), s’s (lost souls), o’s (Cacodemons) , B (Hell Barons) and every other hellspawn from the original game you encounter.
You start the game by choosing a trait which will help you in the course of the game, all with different effects, and which you will be able to upgrade after having acquired enough experience (it’s a RogueLike, remember?). First thing you’ll notice after starting the game is that the original music is in the game, getting you all fired up to kill some demons. Then you’ll notice it has all the original sounds from Doom, which will certainly make you happy if you played Doom before.
After blasting everyone to %’s, #’s, and “’s you change levels by going down stairs (<), of which there are sometimes different coloured ones (<) which lead into an Arena. There a devilish voice tells you that he will free you from there after you killed all the (difficult) enemies, with the promise of a reward. Beside these arena levels the other levels are in true RogueLike fashion randomly generated. One thing to look out for though is levers. They can heal you, explode things in the distance killing enemies, but also spawn a pool of lava underneath your feet condemning you to almost certain death.
All in all it’s a very fulfilling game much like the original, blasting everyone with your trusted shotgun, blowing up barrels and taking walls and enemies down with them. It’s basically a bloody fast-paced RogueLike with not too many numbers if that puts you off, and I recommend everyone to at least try it even if you’re not that fond of ASCII graphics.
A good thing to do before playing, is reading the original Doom comic, which will certainly bring you in the mood.
